South India Tour Packages from Malaysia: A Complete Guide

South India tour packages from Malaysia are built around a short flight and a long list of places worth the trip: the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, the island temple town of Rameswaram, Kanyakumari at India's southern tip, and the tea hills and backwaters of Kerala. A direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Chennai takes about four hours, so even a one-week holiday gives you real time on the ground.

This guide explains how a package works, which route and airport to choose, and what to settle before you pay. It is written for families, couples, senior parents and temple groups travelling from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Selangor, Johor Bahru, Ipoh and Malacca. If you already know what you want, you can see our South India tour packages or message us on WhatsApp for a plan and a quotation in Malaysian Ringgit (RM).

Why South India suits travellers from Malaysia

A short flight. AirAsia, IndiGo and Malaysia Airlines fly direct from Kuala Lumpur to Chennai in about four hours, and Kochi also has nonstop flights from Kuala Lumpur. Flights to Trichy and Madurai may be direct or may include a connection, depending on the airline's schedule, so check current timetables before you book.

Almost no jet lag. India is 2 hours 30 minutes behind Malaysia, so your body clock barely notices the trip.

Familiar food and language. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian South Indian meals are available everywhere. Tamil is widely spoken in Tamil Nadu and Malayalam in Kerala, and English is common at hotels, airports and tourist sites.

Easy ground travel. With a private vehicle and driver you can cover several towns without handling trains, buses or luggage yourself. This matters most for families and senior parents.

Three kinds of South India tour packages

Temple and pilgrimage tours. These link the main temple towns of Tamil Nadu: Madurai, Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Thanjavur, Srirangam, Palani and Thiruchendur. Start with our South India temple tour package or the Tamil Nadu temple tour package. For a shorter trip, the Madurai and Rameswaram tour package works well. If you want a specific circuit, see our Navagraha tour package and Arupadai Veedu tour package.

Kerala holidays. These focus on Munnar's tea hills, Thekkady's spice gardens and Periyar, the Alleppey backwaters and Fort Kochi. Our Kerala tour package shows how these fit together.

Tamil Nadu and Kerala combined. Longer trips of 7 to 13 days cover the temples first, then cross into Kerala for hills, backwaters and the coast at Varkala. The sample routes below show how.

Tirupati, in Andhra Pradesh, is usually planned as its own pilgrimage. See our Tirupati tour packages. We arrange travel only, and darshan procedures are managed by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).

If you have one week, our guide to a 7-day South India itinerary from Kuala Lumpur walks through one route in detail.

Which airport should you arrive at?

Most routes start at Chennai (MAA), Trichy (TRZ) or Madurai (IXM).

You can arrive at one airport and fly home from another to avoid doubling back. Our guide to the best airport for a South India tour from Malaysia and the airport transfer guide explain how to choose.

What a package usually includes, and what to confirm

A private South India package typically covers:

  • Hotel stays for each night of the itinerary
  • A private air-conditioned vehicle and driver, chosen by group size: Sedan, SUV, Urbania or Tempo Traveller
  • Airport pickup and drop
  • Sightseeing as listed in the day-by-day plan

These are usually paid separately: international flights, visa fees if any, meals not listed, special-entry temple tickets, camera or entry fees, tips and personal spending. Packages differ, so read the written quotation line by line. For what moves the price, see our South India tour package price page and our guide to South India tour package price from Malaysia in RM.

Visa, money and SIM basics

Malaysians need an Indian visa before travel, and most apply for the e-Tourist visa online. The Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has announced a free 30-day, double-entry e-Tourist visa for Malaysian passport holders from 1 July 2024 to 31 December 2026. Rules can change, so confirm on the official Indian government portal before you apply. We can also help through our tourist visa assistance.

The currency is the Indian Rupee (INR). Hotels and shopping malls accept major cards, but carry some cash for temple offerings and small shops. A local SIM card keeps WhatsApp and maps working. Our Malaysia to South India travel guide covers all of this in one place.

When to go

November to February is generally the most comfortable time for sightseeing. In October to December, the northeast monsoon can bring rain to Tamil Nadu's east coast, so pack a rain jacket and keep your plan flexible. March to May is hot on the plains, but hill stations such as Munnar, Ooty and Kodaikanal stay cooler. June to September is the monsoon in Kerala, with green landscapes and fewer visitors. Our best time to visit South India page has more detail.
